Artist known as SHE returns to Charlotte and completes 13 murals

Who is SHE?

SHE, the little girl who took ballet classes for eight years on Monroe Road, grew into an internationally exhibiting artist, passionate painter, and accomplished muralist. We met her—the artist who calls herself SHE—last spring. You may have watched her paint LIVE to the funky sounds of Barcerado at our Thursdays Live event in September. (Pictured above).

“My childhood is here,” she says, “I trained for eight years with Charlotte City Ballet. Did you know they used to have a studio on Monroe Road?”

SHE mixed dry mineral pigment into wet medium and lyrically applied to the canvas.

How did the native Charlottean who earned her AFA in North Carolina end up apprenticing with Siegfried Hermann—official restorer of St. Peter’s Cathedral (St. Pedri Dom) in Bremen, Germany—and learning the European techniques of fresco restoration?

“I thought I was going to Germany to immerse myself in the language and culture, but it turned into a worldwide adventure.”

Journeying through ten countries and hundreds of communities, she amassed deep and diverse cultural experiences — “beautiful ideas and inspiration” that passionately spring forth in her work today.

13 murals and counting

When SHE returned to the United States, she put that inspiration into her work. Anonymously at first—later doing a tour of her own murals to add her signature to each—she completed over 13 murals during the course of the pandemic. We have listed a few here, but you can see more on her website: SHE Originals.

Believe it or not, this rug is a mural! Commissioned by Two Buck Saloon at 1113 Hawthorne Ln. Charlotte, NC 28205.

A giant magnolia and lion are part of a hidden pictures game on a multi-wall mural that wrap around the outdoor patio area of Dish at 1220 Thomas Ave, Charlotte, NC 28205.

Commissioned by NoDa Neighborhood Association with support from Sweet Lews BBQ, the mural depicts the seven mills and community gathering spaces in The Mill District: Belmont, Optimist Park, NoDa, and Villa Heights. You’ll find other clues symbolizing the local area as your eyes explore this feast of a mural. Located at 923 Belmont Ave, Charlotte, NC 28205

Catch her if you can…

This Sunday, March 20, 2022 from 4:00-8:00pm, SHE will be painting LIVE at Edge City Brewery. There will be sidewalk chalk on the patio for guests to create their own art as SHE paints on a large canvas. You will also be able to view and purchase paintings from the collection of dynamic pieces on display in Edge City’s taproom and private grain room.

The event is free and everyone is welcome. SHE asks that you please consider making a donation to benefit Reach Scholarship Program, a community outreach program that makes quality dance training available at no cost to young people in our at-risk communities. Through need-based scholarships, Charlotte Ballet lowers the barriers of entry for young dancers who demonstrate natural talent and potential.

SHE is encouraging a thread of giving at $25 each to reach a goal of 10 three-year scholarships, but any amount is appreciated.

“Help get the word out about the program which makes performing arts training accessible when it otherwise would not be. Shout out to the love of community and the local arts!”
