Protected bikeway planned for Conference Drive – learn more at May 26 public meeting

News

As part of its push to improve the bicycling and pedestrian experience along the Monroe Road corridor, the Charlotte Department of Transportation plans to build the Conference Drive Bikeway. The goal of the project, currently in the design phase, is to better connect neighborhoods east of Independence Boulevard to East Mecklenburg High School and other destinations on the west side of Independence.

To do so, the project will convert one travel lane on Conference Drive into a 10-foot-wide, two-way protected bikeway and redesign Peacekeepers Way to continue the cycle track.

To learn more and share feedback about the project, you can attend the drop-in public meeting happening 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 26 at the Independence Branch of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library (6000 Conference Drive).

At the public meeting, CDOT will be looking for feedback on:

  • Vertical separation elements (types, placement, tradeoffs).
  • Real-world travel behavior (like school drop-off patterns and crossing locations).

Construction is estimated to start mid-2027.

This could have a significant and positive impact on our community, creating safe biking and walking connections over Independence Boulevard and improving accessibility to schools, the library, shopping and restaurants, and nearby greenways.

Attend the public meeting to learn more and share your feedback!
