Inside Monroe Road’s Crepe Bistro restaurant

Read our March 2022 article on Crepe Bistro:  Local Ukrainian family, owners of Crepe Bistro, donating 30% to help their homeland”

Do you know that we have an excellent crepe restaurant right here on Monroe Road? Well, we almost didn’t. The original plan was to open an elaborate restaurant in Gastonia, with over-the-top everything, but they changed their location for Charlotte. Lucky for MoRA, Crepe Bistro located here!

Crepe Bistro is a family-owned business restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner at 1605 Galleria Blvd, Suite 140 Charlotte, North Carolina. The shop serves paninis, sandwiches, waffles, wraps, beer, wine, and even espresso. The creation of Crepe Bistro gave a chance to share traditional preparations and nouveau creations. Crepes are famous around the world and are considered to be one of the most delicious dishes. Crepe preparation has been a national tradition for centuries in the owners’ home country of Ukraine and around Europe.

Julia Watson studied Spanish and English languages at Kyiv National Linguistic University and practiced languages in the US during summer break. She couldn’t decide where to go in the US, so she closed her eyes and put her finger on the map, landing on Myrtle Beach. There she fell in love with her now-husband, Craig Watson, a Gaston County native.

The Gastonia location idea did not work out. Fortunately for us, Julia was familiar with the Monroe Road area because she frequently shops for eastern European foods at nearby A&A International Foods. She saw an opportunity for a crepe restaurant in the Galleria Shopping Center and the rest is history. She invited her sister Marina and their mother Galina to move to the US to help with the realization of her idea. Marina worked as a head of marketing in a big telecommunication company in Ukraine, while Galina is a teacher of elementary school with 30 years of work experience. And the three of them opened Crepe Bistro in March of 2018 at the corner of Galleria Blvd and Monroe Rd.

Mom Galina’s Ukrainian recipes were the inspiration for the menu – “made with Mom’s love” – and includes paninis, wraps, sandwiches, salads, omelets, waffles and of course, crepes. As Julia says, they aren’t your usual Ukrainian crepes. Crepes are loaded full of delicious ingredients. The crowd favorite is the Monte Cristo and French strawberry cheesecake Crepe. Their paninis are great, too. They won first place at the Matthews Business Expo, nomination “Taste of the Expo”!

And, if you speak Spanish, Japanese, Russian or Ukrainian, Julia, Marina, and Galina would be thrilled to take your order in them! So visit and enjoy a unique and tasty experience. As their motto says, “We serve passion.” You can order online on their website, and follow along on their Facebook page.
