School is almost back in session at McClintock Middle School. They have just completed their 8th year of Freedom School, and of course, have welcomed a new principal.

One hundred scholars attended McClintock Middle’s Freedom School.  For six weeks this summer, the students of this Christ Lutheran Church (CLC)-hosted program are focusing on an integrated reading curriculum as well as many other fun and educational activities. Scholars begin each morning with Harambee, a high energy production of motivational songs and reflection, and a volunteer reader. Each week, they focus on areas where each of them can make a difference. This summer the CLC site scholars visited Discovery Place, Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, CPCC, UNCC, the Scholastic Book Fair, Ray’s Splash Planet, Cordelia Pool, and the Hornets Book Bus.

CLC also hosted the only Level 4 class — high school students, mostly from East Mecklenburg High School. This group of enthusiastic teens studied race relations, and finished their summer with a trip to Atlanta, where they visited the Martin Luther King National Historic Site, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Morehouse College, Spelman College, CNN Studios, World of Coca-Cola, and the Georgia Aquarium.

McClintock’s new principal, Mark McHugh, officially joined the school about two months ago. He released the following statement on the school’s website highlighting his excitement.

“Dear McClintock Families, As the new principal of McClintock Middle School, it is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to serve such an outstanding school community. I look forward to partnering with you as we work together to ensure the success of every child. I am proud to be joining the Mighty Scots family. I am a Charlotte native and graduate of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. After graduating from Elon University, I began my teaching career at Myers Park High School. I have also previously served as an administrator at Providence High School and most recently at Community House Middle School. I am busy getting settled and meeting the staff. We are working diligently to prepare for the opening of school.”
