13,000 square feet of retail space on Monroe Road breaking ground in April

The face of the Monroe Road corridor is changing again with groundbreaking on the retail portion of the mixed-use development at Monroe Road and Chippendale Road. Just over a mile from the Meridian Place mixed-use development and Selwyn Property Group retail space across Idlewild, Oakhurst on Monroe will provide modern design on 13,200 square feet of retail space.

The site, within walking distance of the Common Market Oakwold, will complement the 120 Ryan Homes townhouses current under construction off of Monroe Road. There will be a SECU bank location, and they are looking to add full service restaurants, QSR, coffee shop, beer & wine shop, dry-cleaning drop location, hair & nail salon, and other service retail tenants. Phase 1 of the development will feature some stunning patio space looking onto Monroe Road.

Early plans have Oakhurst on Monroe completing exterior construction by November, which should allow new stores to open up around spring. The face of Monroe Road will be undergoing some big changes in the next few months. Meridian Place started construction on phase 2 of their retail space, and Selwyn Property Group plans to demolish the office park on Monroe Road and Idlewild Road in just a few weeks. Early renderings of the Selwyn development have been very encouraging, and we can’t wait for the new Aldi.

The Oakhurst on Monroe announcement is exciting for residents looking for even more amenities in the rapidly transforming southeast Charlotte. This is another development that can give the corridor both more retail but a clearer identity for the neighborhood. In a few years, we may be looking at a very different Monroe Road.
