MoRA Silver Line – Big Changes and Upcoming Events

News

In February 2019 the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (“MTC”) adopted CATS’ recommendation to expand the Silver Line corridor. CATS hopes to complete construction on the Silver Line by 2030. That means the project will have to move along very quickly.

New routes

The route was planned to connect Matthews to Uptown but will now connect all the way to Belmont. The new route will include a stop in Uptown, near the intersection of I-277 and US 74, on 11th Street, where it would be possible to transfer to the Blue Line. The route will also serve Charlotte Douglas International Airport (running along Wilkinson Boulevard) before ending in the City of Belmont. Riders can even connect to the CityLYNX Gold Line trolley and Bank of America stadium for Panthers games.

Future routes

The MTC approved funding of two additional evaluations of options to extend the project east to a terminus in Stallings, and west to end in downtown Gastonia.

Funding the Silver Line

The MTC approved $9 million in funding for engineering and transit-oriented development (i.e. land use) studies to begin the process of making the Silver Line a reality. The studies will include extensive public outreach to residents and businesses along the proposed route to inform the public about developing plans and get feedback on those plans and options. We expect information and outreach sessions to begin in the late summer or early fall.

There’s still no funding for constructing the Silver Line but this is another step in the right direction.

MoRA Stops

Traffic will continue to grow in the MoRA area especially with development ramping up in Weddington, Stallings, and Indian Trail. More public transportation will help keep too many cars from congesting roads like other big cities. The Silver Line, as planned, will include a number of stops through the heart of the MoRA neighborhood. According to CATS, construction could start in as soon as two to three years.

Proposed transit stations in MoRA include:

    • Matthews Township Pkwy (NC 51)
    • Galleria
    • Village Lake
    • Conference Dr.
    • Sharon Amity

Additional stops

Other proposed transit stops along the route include:

    • Bojangles Coliseum/Ovens Auditorium
    • Three Plaza Midwood/Elizabeth stops:
      • Morningside Drive
      • Pecan Ave.
      • Central Ave.
