Patchworks Crosswalk mural installation is happening in Oakhurst

Art, News

Update as of June 3, 2021 – Installation of Patchwork Crosswalks will take place in Fall 2021!  When the schedule has been set, we will update this blogpost and post the dates on Facebook. Stay tuned!

The Patchwork Crosswalks project has been moving forward throughout the winter.

You’ll remember that last fall we held workshops and received inspirational designs from you, our community. From descriptions of childhood neighborhoods to quilt block submissions, there were dozens of heartfelt expressions and memories and designs.

From those submissions, artists MyLoan Dinh and Bunny Gregory created three incredible designs, one for each intersection. We’re keeping the finished designs under wraps, but if you’re watching or participating in the installation, you’ll get a sneak preview.  Then on Saturday, April 24, the community will be invited to the dedication of the FIRST of our four new crosswalk designs.

The painting of this mural will begin in the coming weeks. The other mural installations are scheduled for May and June, and as soon as dates are finalized we will let you know. Want to help out? Or come and watch? See below.

New partner Sherwin-Williams

We’re excited to announce a third major partner in this project: Sherwin-Williams is joining David R. Krug & Associates and Edge City Brewery in supporting MoRA’s public art. They are generously donating paint and painting supplies, and we are grateful.

Sherwin-Williams has partnered with other community art projects in Charlotte, and we’re excited that they are adding Patchwork Crosswalks to their growing list of art collaborations:

  • The Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Association joins with the NoDa Neighborhood and Business Association for the Gordon St Alley Mural project.
  • The Gold District Neighborhood in South End is using Sherwin-Williams for revitalization projects with local artists and business owners.
  • And in Myers Park, Sherwin-Williams is a partner with The Galleries at Eight Eleven creating custom fan decks for the artists’ and designers’ curated offerings.
